PokerSchool Skill League

PokerSchool Skill Leagues
The first PokerStars PokerSchool league was launched in July 2010 for PokerSchoolOnline, and in honor of the anniversary, we have decided to make some big changes!  We're very excited to announce the details about the new leagues, and can't wait to follow the action on the new global leaderboards!  So, without further ado -- welcome to the new PokerSchool Skill Leagues!

Open ... and ... Premier ... and (new!) Qualifier

Beginning in August 2011, we offer three leagues:

The full benefits, structure and details for each league are described below, but first we'll highlight a few key features.

Everyone is invited to play in the Open Skill League tournaments

The Open Skill League tournaments will be available 6 times during each day in the PokerStars.com client and are open to anyone as freerolls.  This means that you will be playing with PokerStars users from all corners of the world.  Each tournament will have small prize pools of $10, but the really big money, as always with our leagues, is awarded based on the final leaderboard standings for the month.

Premier Skill League – by invitation only

The Premier Skill League tournaments will require a ticket for entry which is awarded only to an exclusive set of league participants who prove to be ready for increased challenge, and an even larger prize pool!

Another way to qualify for the Premier league!

The new Premier Skill League Qualifier is designed to provide our school members an alternate method for qualifying for the next month's Premier league. It features a small buy-in and requires a ticket, so you can expect to compete with a smaller, more experienced, and poker savvy field.

One leaderboard for all PokerSchool members

All school members will be ranked together in the same leaderboards – one for the Open Skill League, one for the Premier Skill League and one for the Premier Skill League Qualifier.

The formula for scoring

The new leagues will utilize the same formula that we are using for the July PokerSchool Skill League.  You can find a full explanation here -- Scoring.

More prize pool money!

Both leagues – Open and Premier – have a combined prize pool of over $44,000 per month!

The Premier Skill League

The PokerSchool Premier Skill League will be introduced in August 2011 for the top 1,500 members* from July's league leaderboard.

For future months, the new month's 'Premier Skill League Ticket' will be awarded to the following league participants:

700 members from the Premier Skill League that did not earn at least 20 VPP, or finished too low in the leaderboard will not receive the new month's Premier League ticket, and will therefore only be able to compete in the Open Skill League or the Premier Skill League Qualifier during the month.

Premier league tournaments:
  • Name:  PokerSchool Premier Skill League
  • Schedule (dates):  Daily, starting on the 3rd of each month
  • Schedule (ET):  2:00, 8:00, 14:00, 20:00
  • Location:  Tournament Private tab
  • Buy-in:  [Current month's] Premier League Ticket
  • Prize Pool:  $10

The leaderboard for the Premier Skill League will award the top 500 players up to $30,000 across two levels as follows:
  • 20+    For members that have earned at least 20 during the prior month, but less than 150 VPP, a prize pool of $3,000 with a top prize of $500.
  • 150+   For members that have earned 150 VPP or more during the prior month, a prize pool of $30,000 with a top prize of $5,000.
What are VPP's

Note:  Members that have been invited to the Premier Skill League are not eligible to compete in the Open Skill League leaderboard during that month. For example, if you were awarded an 'August Premier Skill League Ticket', you will not be prevented from playing in the Open League tournaments during August, but your results in those will not be scored for the Open League leaderboard. However all members are welcome to compete in the Premier Skill League Qualifier leaderboard.

The Open Skill League

The PokerSchool Open Skill League is where you can hone your poker skills playing against a large and diverse group of poker enthusiasts!

Open League tournaments:
  • Name:  PokerSchool Open Skill League
  • Schedule (dates):  Daily, starting on the 3rd of each month
  • Schedule (ET):  1:00, 5:00, 9:00, 13:00, 17:00, 21:00
  • Location:  Tournament Freeroll (or All) tabs
  • Buy-in:  No buy-in, it's a freeroll!
  • Prize Pool: $10

The leaderboard distributes to the top 2,000 players its prize pool of over $11,800 as follows:
  • < 20    For members who have earned less than 20 VPP during the prior month, playing for a prize pool of over $1,800 with a top prize of $150.
  • 20+    For members who have earned 20 VPP or more during the prior month, playing for a prize pool of over $11,800 with a top prize of $1,500.
What are VPP's

Notes:  Even though the tournaments are open to anyone in the PokerStars.com client, only tournament results for players that are already school members will be scored for the leaderboard.  School members who are eligible to play in the Premier League are not prevented from playing in the Open League Tournaments, but their results will not be scored for the Open League Leaderboard.

The Premier Skill League Qualifier

For our members that want to increase their chances to qualify for the Premier League, or prefer not to participate in the open events, we created an additional way to earn an invitation:  the Premier Skill League Qualifier league.

These tournaments require a buy-in of $1.10 plus a ticket that is awarded by passing the Core Course Quiz. That means only PokerSchool members that have proven their poker knowledge in the Core quiz will have access to these tournaments.

The top 200 finishers* in the Premier Skill League Qualifier leaderboard will be awarded a ticket for next month's Premier Skill League**.  must have 20 VPP's

Premier Skill League Qualifier tournaments:
  • Name:  Premier Skill League Qualifier
  • Schedule (dates):  Daily, starting on the 1st of each month
  • Schedule (ET):  3:00, 7:00, 11:00, 15:00, 19:00, 23:00
  • Location:  Tournament Private tab
  • Buy-in:  $1.10 and the PSO Member Ticket which you get for passing the Core Course Quiz
  • Prize Pool: Dependant on # of entrants

Notes
: There is no added money in the tournaments or in the leaderboard – this league is intended for qualification into the Premier league only.

Examples to illustrate how the Premier League invitations will be determined:

Example 1:

Player A finishes in place 470 for the July league leaderboard and earned 16 VPP in July.  Even though he finished above place 500 in the leaderboard, this user will not be invited to the Premier League for August as he has not earned the minimum of 20 VPP*.

Example 2:

Player B has earned 267 VPP in August and finishes in place 617 in the August league leaderboard.

500 members in the league who finished in higher positions AND earned more than the minimum 20 VPP during August have already been invited to the Premier League for September, so she will not move up to the Premier League.

Example 3:

Player C plays the Premier League in August, earns 1200 VPP in August as well and finishes in place 450.  He will be invited to remain in the Premier League for September.

Example 4:

Player D plays the Premier League in August, earns 10 VPP in August and finishes in 1st place!  This player will not receive an invitation for the September Premier League as he has not earned the minimum of 20 VPP*.

Example 5:

Player E plays in the Open League in August, earns 21 VPP in August, and finishes in 528th place.  Because only 490 of the members who finished in places 1 through 527 have earned the minimum 20 VPPs in August, Player E will receive an invitation for the September Premier League.  And, 9 more invitations will be awarded to the next highest finishers who also earned the minimum 20 VPPs in August.
